Molt cycle of the natural population of Palaemonetes argentinus (Crustacea, Palaemonidae) from Los Padres Lagoon (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Felix,Mónica M. L.; Petriella,Ana M..
The molt cycle of the natural population of Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili, 1901 from Los Padres Lagoon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was studied in relation to age, sex, and environmental factors. A total of 1645 individuals (740 females, 539 males, and 366 juveniles) were collected and analyzed between December 1995 and December 1996. The results indicate that the sex ratio (males:females) remains around 1:1.4 throughout most of the year. The reproductive period extends from September until February (spring and summer), with maximum sexual activity in October and November. Two cohorts originated in the spring and in the summer were differentiated. Ovigerous females arrest their molt cycle during the intermolt period to restart it after oviposition. The...

Crustáceos no cerrito Ariano Souza, Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul e distribuição de Callinectes sapidus (Brachyura, Portunidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Santos,Cléverson Ranniéri M. dos; D'Incao,Fernando.
While all species of the genus Callinectes Stimpson, 1860 have a continuous distribution on the Atlantic coast of the Americas, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is the only one with disjunct distribution. Considering that this species was introduced in Europe and Japan, it has been suggested that the occurrence of C. sapidus on the southern coast of Brazil was due to the transport by ballast water. In the archaeological site Ariano Souza, located in the estuary of the Patos Lagoon (southern Brazil), remains of crustaceans, including claws of approximately two thousand years ago, were found. A preliminary analysis of this material showed Callinectes chelae. Because this archaeological site is located inside the estuary, it has been hypothesized that these...

In search of standardisation: A comparison of toxicity bioassays on two marine crustaceans (Palaemon serratus and Tigriopus brevicornis). ArchiMer
Le Dean, Loic; Devineau, J.
In order to mitigate the insufficiency of the number of currently available toxicity tests in marine middle, two studies on the effects of cadmium and zinc were carried through with two marine crustaceans: the prawn Palaemon serratus and a copepoda Tigriopus brevicornis. The comparison of methodologies (rearing conditions - experimental procedure) and results obtained allowed to show the advantages and the disadvantages of these two tests in order to consider a standardization.

Casanova, B; Huguet, D; Secretan, S.
A comparison of the skeleton of a successive thoracic segment in various Malacostraca shows the development and growing complexity of phragmal structure. It first appears in some Mysicacea and in Euphausiacea by means of an interarthrodial lamina issued from sternite. In Decapoda, Penaidae, Atyidae, Processidae, Palaemonidae, this lamina is diversified and some elements from pleural origin join it. The beginning of the so constituted wall considerably increases in Nephropidae and becomes ramified.

ArchiMer
Lagardere, Jean-paul.
In the present study, the feeding habits of the bathypelagic shrimps Sergestes arcticus, S. robustus, Pasiphaea sivado, P. tarda, P. multidentata and Psathyrocaris infirma), occurring on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay, were examined. It was concluded through the present observations that these shrimps use the pelagic resources from the environment. On the other hand, their spatial distribution in different layers prevents any trophic competition between them. The nature of the prey organisms is widely determined by the size, the efficiency of the catching techniques, but also by the possibility of special detection (the hypothesis of ocular detection of euphausiids by P. sivado). The absorption of sediment, during the rest hours, is supposed to...

A relationship between antimicrobial peptide gene expression and capacity of a selected shrimp line to survive a Vibrio infection ArchiMer
De Lorgeril, Julien; Gueguen, Yannick; Goarant, Cyrille; Goyard, Emmanuel; Mugnier, Chantal; Fievet, Julie; Piquemal, D; Bachere, Evelyne.
Understanding of antimicrobial defence mechanisms of penaeid shrimp should help in the design of efficient strategies for the management and disease control in aquaculture. In this study, we have specifically analysed the expression in circulating hemocytes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) encoding genes, such as PEN2 and PEN3, ALF, crustin, lysozyme and a putative cysteine-rich peptide. We evidenced a relationship between the level of expression of some AMPs and the successful response of the shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, to circumvent a pathogenic Vibrio penaeicida infection. Additionally, significant differences in some AMP transcript amounts are evidenced between control, non-selected shrimp line and the third generation breeding of shrimp selected...

Taxonomic review of the hydrothermal vent shrimp genera Rimicaris Williams and Rona and Chorocaris Martin and Hessler (Crustacea : Decapoda : Caridea : Alvinocarididae) ArchiMer
Komai, Tomoyuki; Segonzac, Michel.
A taxonomic review of the two genera of the family Alvinocarididae (Decapoda: Caridea), Rimicaris Williams and Rona, 1986 and Chorocaris Martin and Hessler 1990, is presented based on study of type materials and/or supplemental material from recent collections. Two species of Rimicaris, R. exoculata Williams and Rona 1986 and R. kairei Watabe and Hashimoto 2002, and three species of Chorocaris, C. chacei Williams and Rona 1986, C. vandoverae Martin and Hessler 1990, and C. paulexa Martin and Shank 2005, are recognized. All species are exclusively associated with deep-water hydrothermal community. Close relationship between the two genera is confirmed by morphological characters, but the monophyly of Chorocaris is not corroborated. An examination of a good...

Morizur, Yvon; Conan, Gérard; Guenole, A.; Omnes, Marie-helene.
Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. The authors estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, they then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment.

Pequeux, A; Lignon, J.
This paper deals mostly with recent physiological data on ion transport across the gill tissue and an attempt is made to correlate them with blood osmoregulation and ecological distribution in euryhaline decapods. A particular attention is paid to the gills of the fully euryhaline Chinese crab Eriocheir sinensis . Supporting this ecophysiological approach, there is an important ultrastructural analysis of the gill epithelium under various salinity conditions. The possible part played by the cuticle in ions movements is also considered.

Laroche, Jean; Benoely,; Siaviri, A.
Traditional fishing using beach seines was studied over a period of one year at the mouth of the Onilahy river. The catches/efforts were recorded on a daily basis, biological sampling and the measurement of hydrological parameters being carried out twice a month. The moderate variations of salinity and temperature (14 < salinity < 35; 25 degrees C < temperature < 30 degrees C) which were observed in the estuary can be explained by the semiarid climate of the area. Four species of penaeid shrimps are to be found on the Onilahy: Metapenaeus monoceros, Panaeus indicus, Penaeus monodon and Penaeus japonicus, which were mainly caught at the subadult/adult stage with a Carapace length between 10 and 50 mm. The presence of these important sizes at the...

Anatomy and physiology of digestive tract of crustaceans decapods reared in aquaculture ArchiMer
Ceccaldi, H.
The digestive tract of crustacea is complex. It is composed of a shor t oesophagum, a stomach with two bags, and internal wall with appendags specialized in grinding of feeds. These hard mastication pieces represent the gastric mill. Setae, filters included in the stomach structure allow the separation between food particles and liquid compounds. Those one are coming over through filters and more on to the digestive gland tubules or mid gut gland. In this organ, several types of cells play specialized functions: absorption, enzyme secretion, stocking function. Some cells of a new type, with undefined function, may be neurosecretions function, have been described recently. The end of tubules of digestive gland exhibits cells with embryonic characteristics....

Morizur, Yvon.
The size and age at sexual maturity of the lobsters was determined by secondary sexual characteristics (1) morphological criteria such as length of P1 protopodite, size of the abdomen, and the presence or absence of ovarian hairs in the female; and (2) functional criteria such as the presence of spermatophores in the female and development of the ovaries. A study of fecundity was carried out after maturation of the ovaries and at the end of incubation. The number of eggs lost during incubation was estimated at 45%. The contribution of different age classes to the global fecundity of the stock was simulated on a model of fecundity by recruits.

Cyclodorippoid crabs from the Philippines collected by the PANGLAO 2004-2005 and AURORA 2007 expeditions ArchiMer
Ahyong, Shane T.; Ng, Peter K. L..
The cyclodorippoid crabs from the Philippines collected by the PANGLAO 2004-2005 and AURORA 2007 expeditions are reported. Five species of Cyclodorippidae are reported: Corycodus mina x sp. nov., Ketamia depressa (Ihle, 1916), Krangalangia spinosa (Zarenkov, 1970), Tymolus brucei Tavares, 1991, and Xeinostoma sakaii Tavares, 1993. Corycodus minax is the second species of the genus to be recorded from the Philippines and is most similar to C. merweae Tavares, 1993, from South Africa. Krangalangia spinosa is reported for the first time from the Philippines. Sexual dimorphism in the length of the walking legs (pereopods 2 and 3) is reported for Tymolus brucei and may be a general feature of cyclodorippoids. Morphological and molecular description of new species of squat lobster (Crustacea: Decapoda: Galatheidae) from the Solomon and Fiji Islands (South-West Pacific) ArchiMer
Cabezas, Patricia; Macpherson, Enrique; Machordom, Annie.
The family Galatheidae is among the most diverse families of anomuran decapod crustaceans, and the South-West Pacific is a biodiversity hot spot for these squat lobsters. Attempts to clarify the taxonomic and evolutionary relationships of the Galatheidae on the basis of morphological and molecular data have revealed the existence of several cryptic species, differentiated only by subtle morphological characters. Despite these efforts, however, relationships among genera are poorly understood, and the family is in need of a detailed systematic review. In this study, we assess material collected in different surveys conducted in the Solomon Islands, as well as comparative material from the Fiji Islands, by examining both the morphology of the specimens and...
